Dr Jayne Stevenson

Dr Stevenson is interested in helping people through multiple modalities, by first thoroughly listening to their story, to understand why they are presenting now, with their current problems or symptoms, and often it is necessary to understand their life story, which may also involve meeting with family members, or talking with others that have been involved in their treatment journey. Medications may be very helpful, but Dr Stevenson also specialises in psychodynamic psychotherapy, and in psychoanalytic psychotherapy which may be helpful for you. Dr Stevenson is also interested in considering what other therapies, or treatments with other practitioners could help you, as well as being part of a team in your recovery.

A Graduate of the University of Western Australia in 1995, she was then an intern and resident in Hobart, before venturing overseas and completing her Psychiatry Board Certification in the USA, with additional training in psychiatry related to medical illness, integrative psychiatry, and completing contemporary psychoanalytic training as a psychoanalyst at the New York Institute of Psychotherapy. She was a psychotherapy supervisor for over 10 years through the University of Washington, and lived and worked throughout several regions of the USA, before returning to Australia and obtaining her Australian Fellowship in 2022 (FRANZCP). When she returned to Perth she worked at Perth Clinic and subsequently in the public system looking after hospitalised patients and supervising and teaching psychiatry trainees, which she is continuing to do, while also returning to private practice.

Dr. Stevenson’s main interests are: anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Dr. Stevenson does not accept referrals for patients who are actively suicidal or have had psychiatric admissions within the last 12 months, nor do they treat individuals with substance use disorders. Some patients with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) may be seen for assessments or treatment, with the understanding that an hourly rate will be charged for time spent preparing reports. This also applies to the preparation of letters or forms for the NDIS or DSP applications.

Dr. Stevenson is focused on building a practice where patients seek treatment with psychodynamic psychotherapy, typically in combination with medications. The primary age group treated is 18 and up, though patients as young as 16 may be seen in certain cases. Dr. Stevenson is open to treating some patients with Bipolar Disorder and is also interested in patients with co-morbid physical illnesses, including chronic pain, cancer, neurological conditions such as seizure disorder or Parkinson’s disease, as well as those with Functional Neurological Illnesses like non-epileptic seizures. Patients with eating disorders may be considered if they are working with a dietician, have a normal or near-normal body mass index, and have not required refeeding admissions in the past six months.
